Mark, I appreciate your carefulness regarding helm ergonomics and am sorry I can’t deliver a direct answer. However, I tested a lot of Garmin MFDs including 7- and 12-inch models just prior to what you’re dealing with, and I suspect that you’d find the 743xsv quite satisfactory. Hopefully others will weigh in, like maybe Ben Stein, though I think he is still traveling with RV and family.

I can’t find one on display anywhere nearby. Thinking of pairing a 743xsv as a secondary with the 8610xsv I already have on my console. It’s the only Garmin unit that will fit in the space I have unfortunately. I’m just wondering how it compares to the 8610 IPS display as far as brightness and speed goes. I do understand there’s a big discrepancy in resolution, but the smaller screen should mitigate that somewhat. Neither unit is directly in front of me so I’ll be viewing both just slightly off axis, maybe the 743 would be slightly more so.

Great article Ben. I never thought to do this (monitor dew point temp) with the Airmar.

BTW, any calibration requires multiple attempts with the boat moving to determine the next adjustment. The screw method can involve multiple attempts and some fustration. Be sure to epoxy when you have it just right, so your setting is not lost.

Greg, if you go to the link below and select “Discontinued” as the Product Series, you’ll find the last NSS 3.0 update and a PDF explaining its features.

But, sorry, I can’t help you with updating the embedded charts and it may not be possible. Companies that sell chart cards, like Navionics and C-Map, have compatibility lists.

Hi Mantas, I’m the other Ben but have tested ultrasonic wind sensors from all three brands (and LCJ Capteurs’). All seemed accurate and long lasting, except that the Maretron design is somewhat fragile if, say, stressed by aggressive shrink wrapping.

But I agree with Dan that it’s quite hard to orient a wind sensor precisely to a boat’s bow for max accuracy, so you might check if your MFD or instrument displays support an offset correction for incoming wind direction info. Or consider pairing the WS0200 with a Maretron display, which can do deep configuration and a lot more. For instance, the WSO also senses barometric pressure and relative humidity, and so a DSM can show both and also calculate Dew Point.

Meanwhile the Airmar 110WX also has pressure, with humidity optional, and configuration may be supported by some displays, though it’s more expensive than the others. I went on about Dew Point (and N2K config details) here: https://panbo.com/monitoring-dew-point-temperature-at-your-helm-why-and-how/

I have a 2011 Simrad NSS8 display with the embedded insight charts, both of which I would like to do a software upgrade on

Are software upgrades possible for a unit this old?

Thanks, Gregg

Would be interesting to get an update from folks that purchased the Sionyx when it first came out and how it has performed. Also, any updates or improvements? Thx.

The MaxiMet compact weather stations have been extensively tested and are well proven in marine environments. The MaxiMet Marine varieties have additional marine features and testing. They are also weather stations, rather than just an anemometer.
